Fine Wood Designs was established by Martyn Bell in 1995, combining his lifelong passion for working with wood with a desire to create beautifully made, individual pieces for his customers.
Working with wood was something Martyn excelled at from an early age, and becoming a joiner was always the career he wanted. More than 31 years later, that same enthusiasm for woodworking remains at the heart of Fine Wood Designs.
Today, Martyn creates made-to-measure timber front doors, Accoya doors, bespoke furniture and built-in cabinetry for homes across Yorkshire and parts of Lancashire.
Every project is different, but the approach remains the same: listen carefully to the customer, understand what they want to achieve and use experience and craftsmanship to create something that works beautifully in their home.

Martyn is passionate about every aspect of working with wood — from the natural beauty of the material to the challenges that each project presents.
He particularly enjoys projects that require a little more thought. An unusual space, an awkward opening or a complicated design is an opportunity to find a solution rather than a problem to overcome.
With a meticulous approach and an eye for detail, Martyn works to millimetre precision wherever possible. He takes pride in getting the details right, from the proportions and construction through to the final finish.
Whether creating a traditional external door for a period property or a contemporary piece of bespoke furniture, the same care and attention goes into every project.
One Craftsman From Start to Finish
When you commission Fine Wood Designs, you work directly with Martyn throughout your project.
From the initial discussion and design through to construction and installation, the same experienced craftsman is responsible for bringing your project to life. There is no handover between sales teams, designers and installers.
This personal approach means Martyn gets to know exactly what you want to achieve and can apply his experience throughout the whole process — suggesting solutions, refining details and making sure the finished result is right for your home.
For customers, it means one point of contact and a genuinely personal service from start to finish.
A Passion for Solving Problems
Not every project is straightforward, and that’s often what Martyn enjoys most.
Over the years he has worked on a wide variety of homes and projects, including traditional cottages, period properties, contemporary homes and Grade II listed buildings. He particularly enjoys finding practical and creative solutions where a standard approach simply won’t work.
His bespoke approach means the finished piece can be designed around the property and the person commissioning it.

For Martyn, one of the most rewarding parts of the job is seeing a customer genuinely pleased with the finished result.
A beautiful door or piece of furniture is important, but knowing that a customer loves what has been created for them is what makes the work worthwhile.
Over the years, many customers have returned to Fine Wood Designs to commission further projects. Some have come back years later for another door, a piece of furniture or a completely new project.

Joiner and Cabinet Maker
Martyn is responsible for every stage of a project, from the initial consultation and design through to making and installation.
His passion for woodworking, meticulous approach and practical problem-solving skills are at the heart of Fine Wood Designs.
The Team Dog
The team dog has an important role in keeping a watchful eye on proceedings and making sure no workshop offcuts go to waste.

Julie Bell
Julie provides the administrative support behind Fine Wood Designs, looking after accounts, administration and the website.
While Martyn works directly with customers and manages their projects, Julie keeps the office side of the business running smoothly.
Handcrafted in West Yorkshire
Fine Wood Designs is based in Keighley, West Yorkshire, where all our bespoke external doors and furniture are built in our workshop.
We work with customers throughout Yorkshire and parts of Lancashire, including West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and surrounding areas.
