Choosing the Wood for your New Door

It’s important to make the right choice for you, when looking at the different options available for a new entrance door.  Together, we need to consider:

  • aesthetics – are you looking for a natural or painted finish
  • durability – is the door protected or exposed to the elements?
  • budget & maintenance

Sapele is a great all round hardwood for building strong & durable solid wood doors.  If you are looking for a cost effective hardwood door this could be the option for you.

Similar in colour to Mahogany, Sapele can be stained or painted to create a variety of finishes.

Iroko hardwood doors are extremely durable.  This is a naturally dense & oily timber, with beautiful varied colours and grain.

Iroko can be finished to a clear finish and looks a lot like Teak.

European Oak hardwood doors are not only extremely durable but Oak is a beautiful timber, with consistent grain and a deep golden colour.

Oak is often clear finished to maintain aesthetics but can also be stained to achieve many different effects.  Oak needs to be maintained to keep up with the finish – if left bare it will naturally silver over time when exposed to UV.

If durability is important then an Accoya external door could be for you.  Accoya is a modified timber, in which a process called acetylation enables it to be resistant to rot, defy the elements and stay strong for decades.

A high performance, sustainable treated wood option, with improved stability.  Accoya is ideal for coating and is generally easier to maintain.

Non Standard External Solid Wood Doors

We’ve been building and fitting standard size and non-standard, unusual door sizes and frames in the UK for many years. Panelled Oak hardwood doors with a small viewing window have been a particular favourite amongst our clients.  Sapele doors and Iroko doors are also popular hardwood door choices. These solid wood doors are heavyweight, substantial doors at up to 60mm thick.  These particular doors are finished with Sikkens Filter 7 to provide a superb, hard wearing finish.

Security for your new front door is paramount.  With this in mind, each and every replacement door we complete is fitted with either a 5 lever British Standard Sash lock and deadlock, keyed alike, or a high security multi-point locking system as standard.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is also an important consideration when choosing where to buy a solid wood door.  It’s good to know that all our exterior glazed hardwood doors are built using energy efficient Pilkington K glass.

Planning your new external door

As previously mentioned, all our external doors are built to order, made-to-measure to your design.  When planning the door we consider both your requirements and the period of the property.  We take into account the condition of the existing door you are looking to replace and whether that highlights any weak points we need to address. We will also consider the aspect of the property and the kind of weather your door has to endure.

To ensure we have everything covered, all this goes into the planning to determine how robust the new door needs to be and of course, the all important finish of the door.  There are various choices available to ensure your new doors not only looks good but has the protection it needs.  You can choose from either a spray painted finish or for your new door to be hand finished in a paint or varnish.
